Community Shrine with Heather Hart – Socrates Sculpture Park
Tuesday, August 14, 2012 - 1:00pm
Socrates Sculpture Park
32-01 Vernon Boulevard, LIC
August 13-17, 10am-12pm & 1-3pm
Shrines are used in many cultures. We see them on the roadside, in public parks, museums, and in homes. We use them to remember people or events, to give thanks and good energy, express joy or make wishes, and to think about our favorite things and ideas. You can dedicate a shrine to anything! For this workshop, each group will be creating custom shrines to reflect their community. Participants are encouraged to bring photos or objects to customize their shrine.
This free workshop offers diverse groups of children from neighborhood youth agencies, community groups, summer schools, and day camps the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities inspired by exhibitions at the Park. Artists run two sessions of their workshop each day of the week and teach children fundamental and contemporary art making techniques. Groups can sign up for a single workshop or a combination of weekly workshops. Registration and scheduling will be on a first come, first serve basis. To register your group, please call: 718-956-1819. (Note: For groups only and by preregistration, deposit is required, returned upon arrival)
